Injectables Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOXIN AND FILLER?

Here’s a simplified way to distinguish between the two types of injections: Toxins are used to limit muscle movement to reduce wrinkles, whereas facial fillers are used for plumping and lifting the skin to replace lost volume.

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers are non-surgical injectable gels that help to restore volume, add contour, and smooth fine lines/ wrinkles, which is commonly lost to aging. Fillers are used to quite literally “fill in” areas within the skin to reduce the depth of wrinkles, lines, and folds. The skin remains mobile and flexible, with a natural look, feel, and movement.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILLERS?

There are 3 types of filler preparations on the market – Hyaluronic Acid (HA), calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), and L-polylactic acid (LPA). The most common dermal fillers are composed of HA, a naturally occurring substance in the body that aids in hydrating and plumping the skin (Belotero, Juvederm, Restylane). Volumizing fillers, CaHA (Radiesse) and LPA (Sculptra), are also naturally occurring substances in our bones and muscles respectively, and over time stimulates the body’s own natural collagen growth.

ARE TOXINS AND FILLERS ONLY FOR WOMEN?

Absolutely not! Men and women alike benefit from cosmetic injections.

WILL THE INJECTIONS HURT?

Most patients experience only mild discomfort, but keep in mind that some areas of the face will be more sensitive than others. Measures can be taken to lessen discomfort of injections (numbing cream, ice packs, distraction techniques). Many fillers are formulated with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort.

HOW DO I PREPARE?

A pretreatment instruction list will be provided after the consultation and individualized treatment(s) have been determined. We advise patients to discontinue the use of alcohol and certain blood thinning medications a few days before and after the procedure to reduce excess bruising.

IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?

The downtime after receiving toxin is minimal to none. You may see a few red bumps where the product was injected but typically goes down in 20-30min.
Dermal filler down time depends on patient variability and area(s) treated. Most activities can resume immediately, but general recommendation is to avoid strenuous physical activity for 1-2 days.
